Whoa. This really struck me because I've felt this way at one or two points in my life. Analyzing this in a better frame of mind, though, I think that it isn't always true that you can help yourself. I recall a quote, don't remember if it's in Chazal or a chassidic idea, that tells us sometimes you can't let yourself out of your own prison, and you need someone else to help you by lending a hand and opening the door/pulling you out.
On the other hand, you also have the concept from R' Nachman of Breslov featured in Omek Hadavar's "ein yeiush" - if we believe we can mess things up, we must also believe we can fix them...
There's also a spouse being able to support you in tough times, and ultimately HaShem is always there - which I don't mean to be cliche.
Anyway, thanks for the chilling poem - it definitely touches me and gets me thinking...
Shades of Grey- I guess there is always two sides to a coin... but even if someone reaches a hand down to pull you out, you still have to reach back for it... and that's a great song...

Too true. But "down there" is also where you get to learn about the true you, something which is invaluable.
